The Two Shelves: Nourishing the Body and the Soul

If you were to peek into my kitchen here in Orlando, you’d see two very different worlds organized with the same level of care. One is my Stocked Pantry Shelf, and the other is my Apothecary Shelf. Together, they are the command center of our handmade life.
The Stocked Shelf: The Foundation of the Meal
The stocked shelf is all about the "Bread." It’s where the sacks of Einkorn and ancient grains sit alongside jars of honey and sea salt.
This shelf is built on the rhythm of our daily needs. As a professional scheduler and data manager, I thrive on the order here. Knowing I have the staples for a "no-wait" sourdough skillet or a fresh batch of Dutch baby pancakes means that even on a busy homeschooling day, our table is covered. It’s about preparedness—the peace of mind that comes from knowing the foundation of our physical nourishment is ready.

The Apothecary Shelf: The Heart of the Healing
Then, there is the Apothecary Shelf. This is where the "Blooms" of the garden transition into the "Belonging" of the home.
This shelf is filled with amber jars of dried herbs, tinctures, and homeopathic recipes I’ve collected and refined over the years. While the stocked shelf feeds us, the apothecary shelf tends to us. It’s where I turn when a seasonal sniffle hits or when we need a calming tea after a long day of lessons.
The Apothecary Entry: A Template for Your Shelf
To help you begin your own collection of healing, I use a specific set of prompts to stay organized. You can copy these into your digital notes right now:
Remedy Name: (e.g., Garden Rosemary Tincture)
Harvest Date: [Month/Day/Year]
Method: (Infusion, Salve, or Syrup)
The Goal: (e.g., Digestive Support, Immune Boost)

Why the Balance Matters
I’ve found that a truly traditional kitchen needs both.
The Stocked Shelf allows for creativity and spontaneous hospitality.
The Apothecary Shelf allows for intuition and gentle care.
One is about the fuel, and the other is about the feeling. By keeping both organized and intentional, we create a home that isn't just a place to eat, but a place to heal and grow.
Bringing the Hearth Home
Whether you are just starting your first pantry pull or beginning to collect your first medicinal herbs, remember that organization is a form of love. It’s how we tell our families, "I have thought of you, and I have prepared a place for you."
From the Shop: Many of the herbs I use on my apothecary shelf are the same ones I love to include in our Loaves & Groves Etsy Shop listings.
Get Started: If your stocked shelf is missing its most important ingredient, my Organic Dehydrated Sourdough Starter is the perfect place to begin.
Do you have a space in your home that feels like an apothecary? Or are you currently focusing on building your foundational pantry?
